Aloha, my name is Loren Lapow, and for over 25 years, I’ve had the privilege of guiding people across the breathtaking landscapes of Maui. As a master’s-level social worker, I founded the Maui Hero Project in 2000 to support high-risk local youth on their journey of healing, growth, and self-discovery. Through this transformative program, we reimagined the epic adventures of the Hawaiian trickster and demigod Maui—from fishing up the islands to slowing the sun. As youth placed their feet in the footsteps of these ancient myths, the stories came alive... and so did something within them. They began to awaken to their own inner hero. Over the past two decades, the Hero Project has evolved into a nationally recognized best practice model, replicated with Native American tribes and underserved communities across the country—empowering youth through cultural connection, adventure-based learning, and meaningful rites of passage. |
